Featured Workshop: Animal Homes & Habitats

Students observe real animal homes and various habitats through indoor hands-on exploration as well as a guided tour. Students discuss the essential survival needs of animals, work together to construct an animal home and also work to match animals to their proper habitats and share their findings with the class.

Animal Homes & Habitats

Grades Pre-K-2 | Sept - June
Students observe real animal homes from the collections of the Buffalo Museum of Science and Tifft Nature Preserve through hands-on discovery. A Tifft facilitator will take students outdoors to experience and learn about the animals and their homes. Students will also work to match animals to their proper habitats and share their findings with the class.

Winter Science

Grades Pre-K - 12 | Dec - Feb
Learn about winter weather and how animals and plants are able to survive. Students will look for animal evidence on an outdoor hike, use weather monitoring instruments, and compare animal survival adaptations. Snowshoeing may be requested ($2 per person,) weather permitting

Aquatic Ecology

Grades 3-12 | Apr - Oct
Students discover our essential connection to water and water habitats of the Great Lakes region through hands-on water quality testing and macroinvertebrate sampling. Aquatic biodiversity, adaptations, the history of Tifft and human impact will also be discussed. To study fishing techniques and go fishing, add $2 per student. This informative program is ideal for older students interested in an immersive study fo the waters of the Great Lakes region.

Iroquois Native Americans

Grades 3-12 | Sept - Jun
Explore the history and daily lives of the Iroquois. This workshop includes an interpretive walk through Tifft Nature Preserve, interactive lessons on their domestic responsibilities, inventive tools, and survival of Seneca Native Americans.

Examining Energy

Grades 3-12
Using Tifft’s Visitor Center as a model in sustainability, students will discuss consumer choices of building materials, as well as water and energy saving features. Renewable resources (solar energy, wind, moving water, and geothermal) will be featured and contrasted with traditional non-renewable resources.

Life Cycles

Grades Pre-K - 2 | Sept - Jun
Students explore how all living organisms grow and change by exploring real examples at the Preserve. Different plant and animal life cycles and the corresponding sequence of stages are compared and contrasted through hands-on experiences and student-driven inquiry. This workshop highlights metamorphosis and germination.
