Salamander Tales and Turtle Nails: Wetland Wanderings at the Algonquin Wildlife Research Station
A presentation by Patrick Moldowan
Join us for an exciting presentation from Patrick Moldowan, surrounding his work on spotted salamanders (Ambystoma maculatum) with lessons learned from the long-term turtle studies that have continued for nearly 50 years at the AWRS. Patrick and his colleagues have erected a sheet-metal drift fence around the entire 1-km periphery of the lake, allowing all breeding adults and emergent juveniles to be inventoried from 2018 onward. This work, which he calls BLISS (Bat Lake Inventory of Spotted Salamanders), is addressing questions about individual- and population-level vital rates and the consequences of environmental change for amphibians.

About Patrick: Patrick is a University of Toronto Ph.D. student nearing completion of his degree in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. His field research has been done at Algonquin Wildlife Research Station (AWRS), located in Algonquin Provincial Park north of Toronto. The research station dates back to 1944 and serves as an excellent site for long-term studies. Patrick is one of many biologists, ecologists, and other scientists who have conducted research there over the years.
